Return ‘Em Right is hosting a FREE virtual contest to encourage anglers to use descending devices and venting tools while releasing fish suffering from barotrauma. Anglers can enter Catch, Click, Release by submitting photos of eligible catches on a descending device or being vented.

When:

June 1-July 31, 2026.

Where:

This is a virtual tournament, but submissions from the Gulf and South Atlantic are encouraged.
Rules
Anglers must submit a photo of an eligible reef fish on a descending device or being vented to be entered for a category.
The photo must include the angler and the fish on a rigged descending device ready for release.
The fish must be caught on the date it was entered for and caught within the tournament dates.
Any descending device or venting tool (SeaQualizer, Roy’s Fish Saver, Shelton Fish Descender, FishSaverPro, etc.) may be used as long as it is rigged with at least 1-pound of weight and 60’ of line.
One entry allowed per species per day during the months of June and July.
Anglers must submit the photo and catch information using the entry form. Contact info@returnemright.org for questions about or issues with the form or to submit via email.

Disclaimers:

Anglers are not encouraged to target fish in deep water with the sole intent to release them. Post-release survival is never a guarantee even under ideal conditions.

Return ‘Em Right reserves the right to disqualify any entries if evidence of improper handling, release or a violation of rules is determined.
Return ‘Em Right is not liable for any damages or injuries that may occur while fishing.

How to Enter
Catch an eligible reef fish species and take a photo of the fish on a descending device or being vented. Make sure the angler is in the photo.
Submit your picture via the tournament entry form.
The Return ‘Em Right team will score pictures based on evaluation criteria and the top two finalists for each photo category will be decided by a social media vote.
Photo Evaluation Criteria

Best Release Practices Technique (Primary Priority)

The photo must clearly show responsible release practices, including:

Proper use of a descending device or correct venting technique.
Supportive fish handling (no hand gaffs, no hanging fish vertically by the jaw, no unnecessary restraint).
Gear placement and technique that aligns with conservation best practices.

Speed and Intent to Release the Fish

Judges will prioritize images that clearly show the fish being released quickly and efficiently, including:

The fish still over water or immediately at the surface.
No unnecessary posing or staging.
Clear visual cues that the release process is the focus, not the catch.

Angler Participation & Stewardship

The angler should be visible and actively engaged in the release:

Hands-on operation of the descending device or venting tool.
Clear intent to return the fish safely to depth.
Body positioning and behavior that emphasize care and control.

Creativity & Storytelling in Conservation

Creativity is encouraged, especially when it reinforces conservation:

Unique angles or compositions that highlight the release process.
Creative use of perspective, lighting, or action (e.g., tension on the device line, fish facing downward).
A photo that tells a clear story of responsible release in action.

Quality & Clarity

Fish, angler, and release device/tool must be clearly visible:

Adequate focus, lighting, and framing.
No excessive filters that obscure the release technique.
